The foremost means of realizing contemporary SOA is through the use of XML data representation and the encapsulation and expression of logic through Web services.

With these two very closely related technology platforms comes an ever-growing set of specifications that propose industry standard features for implementing a wide variety of enterprise solution capabilities.

It's important to keep in mind that the maturity and industry support of a specification can vary dramatically. It is also expected that the status and content of these specifications will change over time (new versions of some specifications may not even be backwards compatible with established ones).
